Full Circle

I’m looking for dancers who wish to collaborate for one week on ephemeral solo signatures.

My current research explores choreography as a tool of self-inscription. Dancers who are
interested in moving in conditions where we can access unconscious states of improvisation
and continual flow of material is encouraged to participate.

I will create the structure where we can ascend out of our domestic spaces into a world of
associative states of freedom and generation-by-limitation. I will ripen the dance through
the conditions of association, disassociation, music, and sensation. You will need an air of
quiet concentration as we focus on the qualities of what we do. We will build towards short
improvisations and solo working and solo showing will be encouraged.

We will work in a sequence of days to go on a journey toward unconscious improvisation
and playful states of pushing ourselves. We will challenge our familiar and the habitual and I
will give out specific tasks and perameters to specify your movement and keep you working
in the live moment.

The two hour sessions will be split: the first session will be a systematic yoga-based warm
up focusing on alignment and breath as an activator of energy. After a short break we will
embark on the second session which will be an improvisational, musical journey, a pathway
strewn with creative acts. This session will be physical and responsive to tasks and led-
improvisation. The second hour for me is a choreographic hunt for excavating states and
emerging signatures of the body. Participants will be working within a narrow channel of
play to improvise and generate material that feels good on the inside, that takes away the
frontal focus of Zoom, and puts the participant firmly on their own ground and seeing out of
their own eyes. I will be working with research that removes self-policing and encourages
fully embodied expression.

I’m looking for dancers who enjoy the challenge of concentrating to form and reform
material, and who have a good working knowledge of their habits and desires.

Dancing through screens is weird but I hope we can build up some privacy through our daily
sessions and for that reason I’m looking for dancers who can commit to the full week. Some
voice and text work might be a part of the process.

Full Circle research is funded by Creative Scotland
