Cree Barnett Williams

performer with johannes wieland & marina mascarell

United States of tension

we move between freedom and restriction, willingness and rebellion. we choose to switch between instinct and information. we drift, we flow, we cut between physical qualities and psychological states that co-exist, belonging to each other, yet simultaneously striving to maintain their identity. we bring structure to improvisation and invite freedom to invade what is set. we dissociate, we black out, we remain present. states of tension: transforming the narrative of movement, language and performance. this workshop will focus on finding freedom within restriction and transforming the narratives we build, both performatively and personally.

some workshops offer group improvisation or partnering. these workshops elements may or may not be possible and the teachers and choreographers will modify their workshops accordingly in line with the health and safety measures required at the time. please stay flexible. thank you!

Jamaican-Irish and British born, Cree Barnett Williams is a Berlin based dance artist and model working across Europe. Her own creative and performative research and work stems, essentially, from the manifestation of trauma in the body; she is interested in the body as a resource for storytelling and human connection, and the importance and potentiality of humour as a mirror, in reflecting and deconstructing our understanding of ourselves, and in humanly making us available to connect to a piece of work, its performers, its subject matter and each other. A graduate of the Rambert School in London, Cree has spent the last decade working in the fields of contemporary dance and dance theatre, first as a freelance dancer and teacher in the UK and then as a member of the Johannes Wieland Company at the State Theater Kassel from 2015 to 2019. Currently, Cree is working with choreographers Marina Mascarell (ES/NL), Elisabeth Schilling (DE/LU) and Johannes Wieland (DE/US), as well as choreographing her own work. She has also appeared in Punchdrunk’s The Third Day: Autumn (HBO/Sky Arts), Change (dir: Philippe Tempelman, choreo: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui), designer Richard Malone’s SS21 collection film Rehearsal (London Fashion Week, Centro Centro Madrid), as well as Altered States Magazine, The Face Magazine, and Vogue Italia.
