Kinetic Orchestra

Kinetic Orchestra is a contemporary dance company based in Helsinki. We have a long history of combining acrobatic movement disciplines and martial arts with contemporary dance techniques. In our workshop, we will explore the specific movement practice at the core of Kinetic Orchestra's artistic work. Our goal is to create dance that embodies clear kinetic sensations like falling, speed changes, circular patterns, and transfer of movement energy from one move to another. Each day, we start warming up with games and simple physical movement tasks that gradually awaken our sense of balance, space, and distance. We then move to more agile and physically challenging movement tasks and explore the movement ideas we use in our artistic work. If the situation is good and safe, we will concentrate on partnering, and if not, we will continue with solo work. We will spend much time on our hands and the floor level. Special attention will be put in researching the backside of the body and its spatiality in 4D. The pace of the workshop will be intense, but there will be plenty of time for questions and the exploration of technical details. We'll seek to create a safer space for learning. Our practice is about you learning, not us showcasing our skills.

some workshops offer group improvisation or partnering. these workshops elements may or may not be possible and the teachers and choreographers will modify their workshops accordingly in line with the health and safety measures required at the time. please stay flexible. thank you!

Jarkko Mandelin is a Finnish choreographer (MA), dancer, and the artistic director of Kinetic Orchestra Dance Company. Mandelin seeks inspiration from the functionality of martial arts, acrobatics, and different partnering techniques. He is always seeking new, agile, unknown ways to find how mass and speed work in partnering and movement. Mandelin has been teaching contemporary dance and partnering techniques for almost twenty years while working as a dancer and choreographer, in Finland and abroad. Amongst other things, he regularly teaches at SEAD. Oskari Turpeinen is a dancer and dance teacher. He graduated from the Theatre Academy of Helsinki in 2013 and has since worked with several choreographers and companies, including Raekallio corp., Sari Palmgren, and Mikko Makkonen. Turpeinen has been training with Mandelin for almost ten years. He works at Kinetic Orchestra as a company dancer and is deeply devoted to movement research, always exploring new routes and passages with Mandelin and other company members.

Kinetic Orchestra, founded in 2009, has grown to be known for its unique movement practice that studies spatiality, dimensionality, and the load-bearing capacities of the body. The distinct movement style combines acrobatic partnering with different dance techniques. Currently, the company employs three dancers yearly and ten to fifteen dancers per year for shorter periods. In 2019, the Union of Dance and Circus Artists in Finland awarded Mandelin and the company for their dedication and ambition towards movement exploration.
