Pau Aran

Atelier - Technique, composition and movement research

In his pedagogical approach, Pau Aran proposes to work on movement based compositional factors of dance: energy, form, space and rhythm. The Jooss-Leeder method inspires much of his work. Respecting different needs and circumstances of the group, Pau utilises and focuses on breathing, repetition, opposing directional forces, and different qualities of movement with a deep focus on gestural intention to gradually fine-tune and develop the instrument/body. His creative process proposes a space of contact with oneself, without pretensions or judgments. A space for sensitivity and expressiveness, where everything is possible. Each body has its own language, unique and perfect. With these premises, there will be work through play and pleasure, with composition exercises, improvisation and body narrative. The search will open to dialogue with oneself and with others. Participants will connect with a personal, authentic expression and develop a greater awareness of their limits, in order to overcome them. This methodology is also inspired by his experiences of working with Pina Bausch and her company in Wuppertal. Thus, through guidelines and instructions, the group will develop a resilient, open and autonomous way of thinking. An invitation to personal empowerment that also offers us a creative group process, where each one discovers, questions, expands their language, to end with a physical, mental and sensory experience, responsible for their own journey.

some workshops offer group improvisation or partnering. these workshops elements may or may not be possible and the teachers and choreographers will modify their workshops accordingly in line with the health and safety measures required at the time. please stay flexible. thank you!

Pau Aran is a Spanish born dancer, choreographer and teacher, now living and working in Germany. During his studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma in Madrid, Pau was invited to attend the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. This led to his most significant training, in Wuppertal and under the direction of Pina Bausch. Since 2013, and in parallel to his career as a dancer, Pau has been creating his own work which has been presented in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Chile and Japan. He develops the expression of his art through body language, focusing his work on the creation and pedagogy of contemporary dance. The beauty of movement and his interest in the poetics of contemporary dance are represented in his projects, creating intimate spaces where the audience can breathe and open their emotions, utilising the stage space as a temple to reconnect with ourselves through art. Pau Aran dance company was founded in 2020 with the intent to develop, transmit and apply previously gained knowledge, to his own current choreographic language and teachings. With a commitment to share his experiences to the next generation, Pau simultaneously encourages self-discovery in his students, performers and collaborators. He further develops the individuals’ identity by adapting learned practice and moulding it to a new reality. Combining the passage of time and transient nature of dance, fusing heritage and tradition, with the future.
