EMBODYING CRITICAL SITUATION

The workshop also emphasizes the importance of the core structure of the body and its relationship with movement. Through different methods of kalari payattu and other martial arts, participants explore how to use breath, speed, and energy to create a strong and dynamic body that is capable of expressing emotion and reacting to different situations. As part of this practice, participants invent scores or situations to provoke a reaction from the body, allowing the mind to follow in response. This approach encourages dancers to be present in the moment and to respond authentically to their surroundings, rather than relying on pre-planned movements or choreography. Through various tasks and scores, participants are encouraged to disengage the mind from the body and observe their reactions, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of their physical and emotional responses to different situations. The workshop also encourages participants to identify their own individual style of expression and to explore this through movement. Overall, this workshop offers a unique opportunity for dancers to explore improvisation through the lens of martial arts principles, and to develop a deeper understanding of their own bodies and their relationship with the surrounding environment. By combining movement practices with research into sensorial perceptions and early memories, participants are able to create performances that are both authentic and deeply expressive.
