United States of tension

we move between freedom and restriction, willingness and rebellion. we choose to switch between instinct and information. we drift, we flow, we cut between physical qualities and psychological states that co-exist, belonging to each other, yet simultaneously striving to maintain their identity. we bring structure to improvisation and invite freedom to invade what is set. we dissociate, we black out, we remain present. states of tension: transforming the narrative of movement, language, and performance. this workshop will focus on finding freedom within restriction and transforming the narratives that we build, both in performance and personally.

the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!

biography

cree finds her love for dance in the spaces in between the contradictions of a problematic industry. she finds joy in facilitating and holding space for challenging and judgment free movement exploration and discussion, through thoughtfully guided workshops and curated talks. a graduate of rambert school, cree danced at staatstheater kassel/johannes wieland, has worked with tom weinberger, helder seabra, thrbdrgns, marina mascarell, elisabeth schilling and christopher roman, and on film with sidi larbi cherkaoui (change), punchdrunk (the third day: autumn) and holly blakey (issey miyake’s rhizome). most recently, cree featured in director carla massolini’s short film, to the body, as both actress and movement director. the film explores anxiety and depression and has won awards at 10 international festivals. cree's own work has been seen at staatstheater kassel, the place london, b12 festival, mayfest bristol, london’s royal opera house linbury theatre, sadler's wells’ lillian baylis studio, and dock 11 berlin. she has moderated and co-curated artist talks and panel discussions in berlin for b12 festival (since 2019) and elsewhere on education, personal & career sustainability, navigating artistic, economic & psychological challenges in the dance field, and the silent dancer & self-advocation. she believes the discussion and interview formats to be critical in connecting us as individuals through our experiences, while also challenging the structures of dance and the arts.
