creative lab

As artists, we are often asked to create material from themes that we did not personally conceive. Together, and through this workshop, we will develop tools on how to bridge this gap and explore ways to approach such tasks through our own unique perspectives and playful exploration. We will begin the workshop with a simple warm up; focusing mainly on honouring our present state. This will be followed by a game of listening, in which we acknowledge and mirror the impulses of the group by participating in its shifting flow of energy and specificity. Each day we will explore tools in creating movement and theatrical scenes that speak to a different theme. We will address each unique theme with questions such as: what does it look like? What does it feel like? What does it remind you of? We will look into how a complex idea can be distilled into an image, a brief moment, a scene, or a text. We will look into improvisation as a way to enter into movement exploration. We will generate movement material through free association and then in specific themes and emotional states, while noting the felt difference and creative obstacles between the two. additionally, we will take a closer look into the act performance and what dynamic energies are engaged and, in turn, how such states give way to creative choices.

the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!
