As artists, we are often asked to create material from themes that we did not personally conceive. Together, and through this workshop, we will develop tools on how to bridge this gap and explore ways to approach such tasks through our own unique perspectives and playful exploration. We will begin the workshop with a simple warm up; focusing mainly on honouring our present state. This will be followed by a game of listening, in which we acknowledge and mirror the impulses of the group by participating in its shifting flow of energy and specificity. Each day we will explore tools in creating movement and theatrical scenes that speak to a different theme. We will address each unique theme with questions such as: what does it look like? What does it feel like? What does it remind you of? We will look into how a complex idea can be distilled into an image, a brief moment, a scene, or a text. We will look into improvisation as a way to enter into movement exploration. We will generate movement material through free association and then in specific themes and emotional states while noting the felt difference and creative obstacles between the two.

please be aware of our early bird special offer for this workshop! you can apply for this offer up until the 24th of march 2023. after the 24th the regular workshop fee applies. applications are accepted up until one day before the workshops starts.

Jonathan Fredrickson was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. He graduated from California Institute of the Arts, where his curiosity for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary art was nurtured. His professional performance career has expanded over 16 plus years, having danced with the Limón Dance Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and, most recently, with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. On international stages, he has been featured in works by diverse artists, including Pina Bausch, Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, Sharon Eyal, William Forsythe, Alonzo King, Jiří Kylián, Jose Limón, Ohad Naharin, Alan Lucien Øyen, and Dimitris Papaioannou, to name a few. He has created work for Limón, Hubbard Street, and Tanztheater Wuppertal’s choreographic platform: UNDERGROUND, as well as for international dance festivals and schools such as California Institute of the Arts, CalState Fullerton, Limon Institute, Sundance/Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Nuova X. Jonathan’s creative work sits at the intersection of storytelling, dance, and interdisciplinary form. His search is about creating work that illuminates the human experience. Today, Jonathan is a freelance performing artist who continues to evolve and present his work internationally, and is discovering a new avocation in dramaturgy.
