choreographer & former dancer with the batsheva dance & pretty ugly ballet freiburg
mind the body
The workshop delves into the intricacies of our body and its stunning capacity for adaptation and expressivity. We will explore how meaning is generated through actions, gestures, words, movements, and thoughts, creating an expressive and passionate physicality. We'll articulate attention and awareness through different tasks, structures, and set material, enhancing our knowledge about the moving body and sharpening our mental awareness of its expression. The exploration extends to relationships between words, gestures, and thoughts, refining our understanding of recognition, expression, representation, and mental/physical virtuosity -- mind as a physical engine, and body as a thinking force. Participants will uncover potentialities within these elements, shaping their present experiences. Ultimately, the workshop invites participants to immerse themselves in the rich, embodied experience of the present moment, contemplating the profound connection between our internal selves and the external world. If dance can reveal the truth about the potential of relating to the world, what exactly should we look for when practicing dance?
the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!
biography
since embarking on the dance story, Michael has remained on an unceasing journey, dedicated to evolving his creative work and expanding his repertoire of choreographic tools. He is drawn to tracing the essence of things and asking to celebrate the poetic transgression from one domain to another, with the ability to respond to the ongoing demands of experience with a range of physical and emotional arousal. he is commissioned to create and share artistic experiences utilising various choreographic expressions. his works have been presented at various festivals and venues. michael occasionally works in theatre and ethnography, researching and facilitating artistic expression with different communities, individuals, and cultures. his professional dancing career started with an invitation from naomi perlov to join the batsheva ensemble. after a year, he was invited to join the leading company. he had the opportunity to develop his skills and artistry, mainly with the batsheva dance company (ohad naharin) and the ballet freiburg pretty ugly (amanda miller). michael holds a master of arts (m.a.) from the school of arts & humanities at the university of huddersfield, england. his thesis delved into the use of words, ideas, and gestures within contemporary choreography practice, with a comparative study to the dutch philosopher baruch de spinoza's method of inquiry. he teaches seminars and workshops for dancers, as well as bachelors and masters programs.

Michael Getman
Creation unravels human experiences. Being in a creative mode is instinctive, intuitive, and curious; it is somewhat elusive. I explore my understanding of what creation is and inquire about the boundaries of my knowledge of it. I create because I have to — or, rather, to understand my relationship to my own desire. To dance means to be on a constant journey and permanent arrival — with one hand to explore and the other to grasp — discovering the what through the how — the specificity of a moment. It is continuous, repeated work, allowing thought and sensation to reflect on and through the body and, eventually, the pleasure of forgetting everything. Choreography is an aesthetic lens through which I arrange the compost of ingredients into amalgamated moments for observation. It involves order, chaos, and the persistence to be more of what it is. Bodies are unique, individual living entities that can interrogate different ideas. Bodies are choreographic landscapes embodying passion, desire, joy, and sadness; they are endless in their potentialities of becoming. I never fully know what a body can do/become. I am curious about the gap between what is and our perception of it. I prefer the experience rather than the illustrative. I am curious about people and their inherent ability to transcend. I ask to reach one person's eye and soul. I know it wishes to appear as one thing.
