The visible thinking body - navigation tools

During the workshop, I will share tools for generating motion and dance, from the movement practice that I’ve been developing since 2013: the Visible Thinking Body (VTB). VTB tools are ways of navigating and thinking the body into motion. What kind of thinking can be made visible in action, and how does it become a dance? With heightened attention to motion, departing from stillness and noticing the inner groove, the process starts with detecting the initiation of movements, then recognising the personal drive to sustain and guide them towards imaginative dynamics. What moves us today, how do we stand firm facing the future storms, what are we standing for, and when should we soften and become permeable? These questions reflect on the role of dance in our times, along and within the nature-culture-technology continuum.

please be aware of our early bird special offer for this workshop! you can apply for this offer up until the 24th of march 2023. after the 24th the regular workshop fee applies. applications are accepted up until one day before the workshops starts.

Sergiu Matis is a Romanian choreographer born in 1981 in Cluj-Napoca. He received his dance education at the Liceul de Coregrafie in Cluj and the Mannheim Academy of Dance, and began his career at Tanztheater Nuremberg. He has been living and working in Berlin since 2008, creating his own works, such as Keep It Real (2013), Explicit Content (2015), Neverendings (2017), Hopeless. (2019), UNREST (2021), and DRANG (2022). He has led workshops and educational activities at a range of institutions worldwide. In 2014 he completed his masters in Solo/Dance/Authorship at the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) / Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). His dance practice could be considered a relentless search through corporeal and digitalised archives, in order to place a critical lens on what has been filed away, salvage what was presumed lost, and reinvent what was undocumented. The accumulation of history serves as an old map, which becomes a departure point, moving towards the revelation of a new imagining of dance. His work provokes intense experiences, which fracture accepted ideas and reflect on the turmoil of our times.
