antony hamilton
artistic director of chunky move
material as dramaturgy
the foundation of antony's teaching is finding awareness of the self-organising intuitive body, as an anchor from which one develops creative movement. this workshop will involve introductory elements of his unique counting system for choreography, which is used in many of his works. participants will also explore the democratic choreographic method that he uses for duets to generate unpredictable movement patterns. the workshop will also include time spent exploring improvisation prompts to develop live compositions. this methodology brings deep awareness and attention of both the internal and external space of the moving body, and tunes the dancer's perception of environmental conditions that interact with the practice. antony's broad experience as a dancer and choreographer has roots in classical ballet, post-modern contemporary dance and improvisation, and global street dance styles, including breaking, popping, and animation. the confluence of these forms, over decades, has produced a unique movement approach that is difficult to neatly categorise. he remains a lifelong student of dance as much as he is a teacher.
the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!
