responsive and unbound

This workshop is an invitation to investigate the body as an emotional, imaginative, and deeply adaptable instrument. We will work toward cultivating a physical presence that is both responsive and unbound — serving as a neutral ground from which any artistic language can emerge. Together, we’ll dive into the physical sensations tied to emotional states and how we can shift, expand, or disrupt those patterns. This includes looking closely at the anatomical realities of transformation — how muscles, breath, and alignment respond to different psychological or energetic demands. we’ll also examine the habits — conscious and unconscious — using them as clues for deeper personal investigation and creative possibility. Each session will begin with a one-hour warm-up designed to challenge perceived physical boundaries — awakening range, stamina, and presence. From there, we’ll move into improvisational explorations that activate limitless states. As the workshop progresses, we’ll introduce set movement material that will be deconstructed, reinterpreted, and transformed. The work will be rooted in play, risk, and experimentation, building a toolkit for approaching any creative challenge from a place of authenticity, adaptability, and presence. This is not about shaping fixed material, but rather about learning to listen, shift, and respond from a body that is alive, available, and in conversation with its inner and outer worlds.

the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!

biography

Born in Canada, Johnny is a dancer and choreographer based in Berlin. Graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy, he began dancing with Hubbard Street 2 and later Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. During that time, he co-founded an interdisciplinary performance arts collective, The Rainbow Body Project, that focused on transformative experience through personal excavation. Leaving Chicago, McMillan joined The Royal Swedish Ballet as part of the contemporary division and made a similar move to Staatsballett Berlin. Independently, he worked with Gleich Dances, Sasha Waltz and Guests, and Jefta van Dinther. As a choreographer, McMillan has created work for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Hubbard Street 2, Visceral Dance Chicago, The Juilliard School, The Royal Swedish Ballet, Stockholm 59 North, Staatsballett Berlin and has produced his own independent work. Other collaborations include work with Niki and the Dove for the concert, Tigern och Svanen, movement direction for Calvin Klein, Oasis, and consultation for Daniil Simkin in the show, Sungazing, featuring music from the sonic entity LABOUR.
