On Movement and Stillness.
The title is a lie, we cannot find stillness, though, as we approach it, different movements become more significant: the heartbeat, the digestion, the breath, the little movements that keep our balance. The warm up is not just moving our bodies but preparing ourselves; The act of taking ourselves from where we are to where we need to be. So often we engage in the thing we want to achieve without bringing ourselves and our desires there. Paying close attention to our physical desires can be a powerful tool for movement creation, for developing new approaches and ways of moving. This workshop will be largely improvisation based, using different approaches to finding detail and precision in movement, and our approach to it. Looking at how certain movements can be highlighted and focused on by placing them in relationship to stillness. Using elements of dance, theatre, and meditation, we will look at how different mindsets and approaches can change our movement patterns, as well as how our movement patterns affect our thinking, towards the creative process, towards performance, and towards life. this workshop is Open to a range of experience levels.

biography
Jos Baker is a British choreographer, director, and performer based in Brussels. After working for many years as a dancer and performer, including a long period with the dance theatre company, Peeping Tom, Jos started making his own work and founded Trodden Dreams. His creations for the stage have included Of No Fixed Abode, The Smallest Little Thing, Put Out the Flame, and Contactless. On screen he has directed Shift, Put Out the Flame - the movie, and co-directed The Hole. Jos also teaches professional dancers internationally.

Trodden Dreams is a production company, founded and directed by Jos Baker, and it incorporates for stage and screen. The guiding principal of Trodden Dreams is to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways. Our aim is to take subject matter from our everyday existence, the micro-tragedies and comedies of life, and to represent them in highly researched and specific movement language. To seek movement languages that speak of the human experience; our strengths and or foibles, our relationships and our isolation, intimacy and detachment. This is rooted in a strong belief that our bodies are each powerful and unique story machines, and that we carry narrative and meaning in everything that we do. We also place a lot of importance on the collaborative process of producing creative spaces that allow groups of artists to flourish and find expression in the work. If two brains are better than one, then many brains, and many bodies, are best. by working and allowing each artist to find their voice, both the process and the product are improved.
