Physicology for performance

Physicology is a training methodology developed by Jos Baker over the last 10 years. It uses a mixture of theory, analysis, and improvisation together with complex and, often, physically virtuosic material to research and learn concrete tools to improve physical and performative technique. One of the difficulties in dance is information management. In any given moment, a performer might be dealing with alignment, balance, precision, the steps or score, remembering to relax, etc, but less on the musicality, dynamics, awareness of the space, composition, physical and dramatic tension, managing risk, managing injury, anxiety, relationships with other performers, and many other things, all On top of which they must make a connection with their audience. Having the correct tools allows us to manage all of this more effectively, allowing for more freedom of expression. By providing a deeper understanding of the physics, psychology, anatomy and performance practice that underpin dance technique, physicology provides a basis to go beyond technique. Tools which can be used straight out of the box, but can also stand the test of time, and which you might end up using for years to come. There will also be a killer playlist and a lot of sweat.

please be aware of our early bird special offer for this workshop! you can apply for this offer up until the 24th of march 2023. after the 24th the regular workshop fee applies. applications are accepted up until one day before the workshops starts.

trodden dreams

Trodden Dreams is a production company founded and directed by Jos Baker, and it incorporates for stage and screen. The guiding principal of Trodden Dreams is to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways. Our aim is to take subject matter from our everyday existence, the micro-tragedies and comedies of life, and to represent them in highly researched and specific movement language. To seek movement languages that speak of the human experience; our strengths and or foibles, our relationships and our isolation, intimacy and detachment. This is rooted in a strong belief that our bodies are each powerful and unique story machines, and that we carry narrative and meaning in everything that we do. We also place a lot of importance on the collaborative process of producing creative spaces that allow groups of artists to flourish and find expression in the work. If two brains are better than one, then many brains, and many bodies, are best. by working and allowing each artist to find their voice, both the process and the product are improved.
