Embrace the duality of our human existence as it relates to us as people and performers. Access your physical prowess and theatrical instincts to deepen your well of capabilities as a mover | performer. The first half of the workshop will focus on a visceral form of physical floorwork based in momentous leveraging of the body, with emphasis on musicality and hyper-dynamic phrase work. The class will also embed cultural dance forms, group collective awareness, and prompts to investigate individual voices of physical expression. Using movement as a gateway into the theatrical realm, excavate characters, emotions, physical states, and explore your range of emoting. Unleash the spirit and action that brings movement to life.

laja field (she/her) is an international creator, performer and dance educator, originally from salt lake city, utah. laja’s passion for the arts is rooted in relatable, non-linear storytelling that evokes the power of imagination as a gateway to reflect on the past, present, and invite a new kind of liberated future. laja is the co-artistic director of lajamartin physical dance theatre with partner, martin durov. their work has been shared in 16 different countries worldwide. highlights include a nyc premiere for the curated series presented by gibney dance company, touring to prisma festival in panama, creating work for ririe-woodbury and, most recently, for project intandem in calgary, canada. as an independent creative, laja played an integral role in bringing her own style of physical floorwork to nyc, where she was also a founding member and rehearsal director with vim vigor dance company. at the start of her career, laja joined the johannes wieland company at staatstheater kassel in germany, where she had the pleasure of working with many incredible colleagues, teachers and artists, including hofesh shechter, ryan mason, sita ostheimer, evangelos poulinas, stella zannou, and chris haring, among others. the same year she joined the company, laja graduated magna cum laude with a bfa from the university of utah in 2012. currently based out of a suitcase, laja continues all artistic endeavours with lajamartin across the globe.

lajamartin physical dance theater is a vessel for live performance and education. co-founded in 2017 by laja field (us) and martin durov (slovakia), the duo premiered their first work in nyc at joe’s pub with dancenow, and shared their last collaborative creation for the ririe-woodbury dance company, titled the bunker. cited in the top 10 moments of the utah enlightenment in 2022, the utah review hailed lajamartin’s work for its comedic tone and breathtaking physicality. over the years, their work has been presented in the u.s by gibney dance, westfest, the southside arts and music festival, austin dance festival, and utah presents at kingsbury hall, among others. internationally, their work has been shared at prisma festival panama, newcastle college england, gif 4 brussels, the b12 festival berlin, and the šibenik dance festival croatia. lajamartin has been commissioned by kizuna dance nyc, the anton bruckner privat universität austria, the j.l bella conservatory slovakia, brigham young university, utah valley university, salt pro, the university of utah, and move|nyc. in their current iteration, martin continues scoring original soundtracks, while laja carries on as sole choreographer and artistic director. over the last year, laja has been an invited guest and choreographer in montréal for transformation danse, calgary with project intandem, nyc for gibneypro and nyu’s second avenue company. amidst her commissions, laja continues developing her solo work, breaking bread.
