framing performance project area 51

are you interested in diving into a collective experience that combines applied cinematic principles and dance narrations? does transmedia storytelling fascinate you? do you seek opportunities that allow you to expand your dance film making practice? this hybrid workshop is designed for you. two teams will work independently, and tightly coupled, to create two different outputs of this unique collaboration. as a final step, they will share both the screenings and the site-specific performance with the community during the 2025 festival edition.

the filming team, supervised by chrysanthi badeka, will observe the storylines and the characters of the performance team led by johannes wieland. our main focus lies on the creation of the short dance film versions of those characters. together, we will analyse their body narrations and their movement in the physical space, in order to transform those dances for the screen. during the dance film workshop, you will get familiar with cinematic equipment, dynamic filming with camera on gimbal, reperage, decoupage, storyboarding, and shootings. the editing of the footage that you will shoot will be done by chrysanthi badeka. however, you need to bring any equipment that you have with you (such as camera, lenses, monitor, tripod, gimbal, microphones, laptop etc).

johannes' team of performers will invent and build different characters. during the project, they will discuss the foundation of a convincing character and what it means to perform it. they will also build little islands of ideas that they will then thread together. space will influence them and they will influence space. then they work together with us, supporting the pre-production preparations, and reconstructing the choreography for the camera and the decoupage.

in the end, this combined group (filming team & performance team) will participate in an open sharing evening with the site-specific performance, which will be presented by the performance team and the screenings of the short dance films. the main focus of this event is the fruitful reconciliations between all of the participants and the audience, sharing their experience and exchanging with each other.

everyone who is interested is welcome, whether filmmakers, musicians, dance film lovers, dancers, physical performers, actors/actresses, singers, circus artists, etc. please be ready to create and take risks, both physically and emotionally.

b12 will provide the final outputs to all participants from both teams (short dance films and the documentation video from the site-specific performance). All of the digital outputs can be shared publicly.

if you are interested in a performance project and a cinematographic experience full of adventure and cross pollination, one of these two teams might be for you!
