capoeira is an afro-brazilian martial art that was created by african people enslaved on brazilian land centuries ago. it is also a cultural celebration of movement, combat, music, history, acrobatics, dance, and community. this workshop aims to teach capoeira technique and interaction principles originating from the game, and to apply them to our contemporary movement practice. as a martial art, capoeira develops instinct, spontaneity, and reactivity, and as an art form, it offers skill, rhythm, and beauty. in this workshop, we will learn basic steps, kicks, and acrobatics, and then play with them in pairs. through games and partnering tasks, we will explore interaction and physical dialogue to communicate through direction, timing, and the intentions. as an improvisation based game, this practice offers us flow in creativity, as well as concentration and alertness in listening to one another. the workshop will provide a variety of tools to playfully enrich your movement practice and spatial awareness, as well as expand your creative skillset and connectivity to space, context, and your partner. the workshop welcomes every body with a passion for movement, with or without experience.
