this performance project is designed for around 15 people and lasts for 12 days (wednesday off). it will be presented alongside two other performance projects at dock 11, a theater in the center of berlin. james’ performance project runs from 5 - 16 july 2023.

this workshop Will be a continuation of the research project, Reloop & recycle. We will explore how the research of movement textures; specifically calculated and practiced improvisational tools can be used to create a nuanced and intimate work; A collaborative process, in which we use certain movement techniques as a departure point to draw out characters, relationships and narrative. We will begin from a physical place of research and allow space for meaning, interpretation and context to reveal itself. This performance project will be a more focussed, concentrated and distilled journey of the explorations in the reloop & recycle workshop. There will be a large emphasis on texture and quality, and how to exaggerate the body to express itself in extraordinary and subtle ways, in order to evoke dramaturgy in a performance setting.
biography
james vu anh pham is an international, multi-award winning dance artist, currently working with opera ballet flanders. as a freelancer, he has worked with akram khan company, eastman – sidi larbi cherkaoui, damien jalet, chunky move – anouk van dijk, australian dance theatre – garry stewart, guested with göteborgsoperans danskompani, bayerisch staatsoper munich and theater basel. james was cast as the lead role in christophe coppens’s le mandarin merveilleux at la monnaie de munt opera house in brussels, performed in creations as it stands and triumphs & other alternatives with muscle mouth – ross mccormack in new zealand, aorta by stephanie lake, and nether by lauren langlois, both for chunky move’s next move program. in 2014 james received the helpmann award for best male dancer in a dance or physical theatre work, and the outstanding performance by a male dancer australian dance award. in 2022 he was awarded the uk national dance award for best male dancer in a modern work for his work in akram khan company’s outwitting the devil. james has created for theater munster, strut dance in perth western australia, sydney dance company professional year, and has researched his creative movement methodology extensively for the last ten years. james is a certified counter-technique teacher and has taught extensively around the world.
