Joy Alpuerto Ritter
former dancer with the Akram Khan Company
Joy Alpuerto Ritter was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Freiburg, in Breisgau, Germany. In her youth, she was trained in ballet, jazz, philippine, and polynesian folk dance, and graduated at the Palucca School in Dresden, Germany, with a dance diploma. She started working as a freelance contemporary dancer in and around Berlin, with choreographers like Christoph Winkler, Heike Hennig, Yui Kawaguchi, and Wangramirez. during this time, she expanded her repertory in Hip hop dance styles and was active in this community in europe. In 2011 she joined Cirque du Soleil as a dancer and aerial artist for the Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour. Since 2013 she has been touring as a dancer and rehearsal director of the Akram Khan Company and has been nominated as outstanding female dancer (modern), for the Performance Until the Lions, by the National Dance Awards UK. Since 2016 she has found international response as a choreographer and creates works for film and own dance theatre pieces. Her signature is finding an interesting fusion of movement vocabulary that comes from different cultural backgrounds. Following her internationally acclaimed solo BABAE (selected for Aerowaves 2020) and award winning piece OZ - the magic in us, Joy’s body of work develops as she leads on the direction of collaborative cross-pollinated performances with an array of talented artists and creatives like Akram Khan, Chen Shi-Zheng, Viviana Durante, Gideon berger and Floria sigismundi.

In the years of her experience as a professional dancer, Joy has developed a unique movement language, which is inspired by different cultural contexts. That versatility is the core of her choreographic work. Within the B12 performance project creation, Joy will be working with different techniques, such as elements of contemporary dance and styles of urban dance forms. Her main focus lies in transformation, character work, and the strength of unity. The movement language is precise, detailed, playful and physical. rhythm patterns and musicality is also an important element in the physical research. In her work, Joy likes to embrace the differences of individuals, but is also interested in common desires, struggles, and hopes of human beings.

on second thought
This dance work will be mostly an improvisational structure that the dancers traverse through with differing outcomes. It will be presented as real-time research that features dancers confronting and filtering through their decisions inside of the act of dancing, ultimately arriving at new, unpredictable places. the compositional framework is set, letting the dancers and their physical materials be the variables that allow for multiple solutions to be presented. With the dancers coming from a variety of social, cultural, and geographical backgrounds, this work will celebrate how their unique histories live differently in their bodies and amplify their creative voices. This piece, built on presentness, will therefore feel alive and be filled with surprises as the dancers commit to challenging their instincts.

Our Impermanent Universe
A succession of slow blinks revealing constantly shifting patterns of thought and action
Like heart beats in glass jars
Or fireworks in outer space
The ethereal, the un-pin-down-able, the just beyond our grasp…
A personal mythology built from collective experience
Enchantment, haunting, madness and magnetism
An instruction manual for new rituals.
Thought patterns are one of the main ingredients in dancing so doing dancing together is a great opportunity to see some pretty interesting people think. Let’s dance think together to build a performance of process and product – a snapshot of concrete impermanence – a place for weird, ugly, beautiful, wildness.
