raul aranha
another contemporary practice
in this class, we will dance to research energy, technique, rhythm, form and more. inspired by contemporary dance, martial arts, and almost-forgotten children’s games, the practice is primarily improvisation based; we study movement patterns, and temporal and spatial choices. together, we explore our subjective anatomy: joints, connective tissues, fluids, fascia and subtle channels of the body, listening to the quiet intelligence that connects it all. we practice listening to ourselves, to one another, and to the space we inhabit through sensorial and meditative explorations, while transforming the soft into the intense, and the intense back into the soft. we use these stories to open portals to our improvisation, moving between games and dreams and unexpected pathways, working on clarity and precision, bringing details and smaller stories to our movements, creating and composing movements while focusing on thematic development of the dance. we find the blind spot in our movement while questioning the identity of dance and ourselves. how can we approach knowledge from a place of not knowing? in what ways can we negotiate with our impulses? through the lens of polite intensity, how do we share, communicate, learn, unlearn, deconstruct, and rebuild? this workshop aims to bring individual agency to a group dynamic where listening, communication, responsibility, and ecology are prioritised, allowing us to play the longest game possible.
the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!
biography
raul aranha is a non-disciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in sensory exploration and improvisation, navigating the edges between softness and effort, play and intensity, intention and abstraction. raul studied at attakalari (bangalore), sead (salzburg experimental academy of dance) and mystery school (pacap 8), among other institutions in india and europe. he has performed with choreographers such as milla koistinen, meg stuart, paper tiger theatre, rosanna rebeiro and more, across europe and asia. his work is deeply influenced by embodied research and collaborative exchange, with key mentors including keith hennessy, maria f. scaroni, kirstie simson, manuel ronda, and jozef & linda. improvisation and contextual responsiveness form his main creative language, inviting the body and mind to engage with the complexity of experience through movement, voice, and perceptual depth.
